The history of DAI
extends over three decades of active collecting, caring, and
promoting Islamic art. The collection began in the mid 1970’s,
with a vision of establishing a home for Islamic art in Kuwait.
These efforts were culminated by the inauguration of Dar al-Athar
al-Islamiyyah (the House of Islamic Art) at Kuwait National
Museum complex in 1983. The collection was removed to Baghdad
with the rest of Kuwait National Museum collections, and
returned as part of the United Nations resolution ending the
1991 Gulf War. Both the artefacts and building sustained heavy
damage, and a vigorous conservation programme was devised to
restore the objects and, rehabilitate KNM complex. |
